Coalition Welcomes Historic DEA Proposal to Reschedule Cannabis
In response to the public release of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) proposal to move cannabis down to Schedule III, the Coalition for Cannabis Scheduling Reform issued the following statement:
“Cannabis has been misclassified as a Schedule I controlled substance – on par with heroin – for more than five decades. That’s about to change. This week’s publication of the proposed rule marks the next major step toward ending this misguided policy, which originated with President Nixon.
“We applaud President Biden and his Administration for conducting a thorough administrative review of federal cannabis policy and charting a new path forward. Reclassification represents the greatest single cannabis reform in American history and will set the course for full legalization.
“Our coalition looks forward to submitting public comment on the proposed rule, which is built upon a foundation of unassailable scientific evidence. The federal government has conducted a thorough review and recognized that cannabis has therapeutic value and low abuse potential – a critical step forward. We are confident that Schedule III will be implemented in the coming months.”
